When we had the chance to help the Oakland Fox with it's face-lift, we jumped! With less than 2 weeks to go 'til the Gala Opening, we were brought in to design and install an HD Video Distribution Solution.
Problem #1: A single coaxial wire was run to each potential TV location during the 2008 reconstruction. Oops. Since it's pretty much impossible to do any kind of HD distribution over a single coaxial wire without purchasing enough gear to outfit an HD Broadcast station, we had to think quickly. I knew that cat5 could somehow be used, but how many runs? How could we ensure stability and color depth over long runs, some over 400 feet? You need a picture by when!!??
Problem #2: We needed some way to control gear in the video room racks from any display location in a huge art deco era building. Wireless was out because of distance and environmental factors. The people in the Fox Den just wanted to change channels, seems simple enough, but these displays were over 400 feet away from the video room housing the DirecTV boxes.
I knew that a quality video-over-cat5 solution could work. But what about IR? Would we have to pull 3 cat5 runs? Yikes! My buddies over at Audioplex in New York had the answer: 18 custom baluns using one cat5 for HD video, and one cat5 for left/right analog audio and return feed for IR commands. Made with a minijack ready for me to plug in the IR target. Tested packaged and delivered in 7 days. Go USA!!!
The quality of the cat5e was crucial so I went with Ice Cable Systems. It pulls very well out of the box and exceeded it's specifications in every regard. The fact that you can squeeze 1080i Analog HD into little pieces of copper and send it 500 feet still blows me away.
With help from an amazing crew: Mike Abrahamson, Sam Seeno, and Mike Azzolino, we pulled over 10,000 feet of cat5e to 12 display locations in seven days. A combination of new and used panels was mounted and calibrated. And we had the promotional DVD looping by the Gala opening. -Bill Chapman
